Bangladesh-Pakistan Relations: India’s two Islamic neighboring countries Bangladesh and Pakistan are going to come together, which can be a matter of concern for India. According to Aaj Tak report, the Pakistani Army which had created terror by entering the then East Pakistan 53 years ago in 1971. Today Bangladesh is preparing to train its soldiers from the same army.
The current interim government of Bangladesh’s Mohammad Yunus has taken a big step towards increasing military and strategic relations with Pakistan. This is going to create new diplomatic and security challenges for India. A team led by General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee of the Pakistani Army, will reach Bangladesh in February 2025, which will train the Bangladeshi Army there.
Pakistan Army’s training program in Bangladesh
The training given by Pakistan Army to Bangladesh will be conducted at the Army Training and Doctrine Command (ATDC) headquarters in Memenshahi Cantt. After this one-year long program, Pakistan Army will provide training in all the 10 military commands of Bangladesh. In this regard, the proposal related to training sent by General Mirza last month in November 2024 was approved by Bangladesh Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman.
Things changed after Sheikh Hasina
After the Sheikh Hasina government, military relations with Pakistan are being rapidly expanded under the interim government in Bangladesh. This can be gauged from the fact that there will be a joint exercise of the navies of Bangladesh and Pakistan at Karachi Port in February 2025. This exercise takes place every two years, but Bangladesh had maintained distance from it for the last 15 years. The current interim government has not only given approval to participate in this exercise, but has also started preparations for joint exercises with the Pakistan Navy in the Bay of Bengal.
Bangladeshi interim government decisions
The interim government of Mohammad Yunus has exempted Pakistani cargo from inspection at Chittagong Port. Direct flight services were resumed between Dhaka-Islamabad. It is believed that Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI has played an important role in toppling the Sheikh Hasina government and forming an interim government. Pro-Pakistan forces active in Bangladesh for a long time are now coming out openly.
Threat to India on many fronts
The growing relations between Bangladesh and Pakistan can pose a threat to India on many fronts. For example, Siliguri Corridor, which is called ‘Chicken Neck’. This is the only route connecting India with the North-Eastern states. Strategic pressure from Pakistan and Bangladesh may increase on this region. Radical forces are already active in Bangladesh. This danger may increase further due to Pakistani influence. Pakistan-Bangladesh military alliance can become a serious challenge to the stability of the North-Eastern region of India.
