A person who was invited to a destination wedding in Florence, Italy, was left stunned after discovering that the welcome dinner came with a price tag of €40 (Rs 3,700) per person. The guest, who had travelled from Vancouver in Canada, turned to Reddit to speak about the incident. They explained that attendees had already spent thousands on flights and accommodation. They questioned whether it was normal or poor etiquette for the hosts to ask guests to pay for the pre-wedding event.

The user in their post detailed that they are attending a destination wedding in Florence this summer. They said that the majority of guests are travelling from Vancouver and this was a long and expensive trip. They added that when they RSVP’d, they were shocked to see the “welcome dinner costs €40 per person”. The person added that given how much they were already spending, they were wondering whether it was normal or bad etiquette.

They further added that they had planned to give a small cash gift but were now reconsidering it.

The Reddit post quickly went viral and sparked a debate over wedding etiquette and guest expenses. Many users agreed charging for a welcome dinner was inappropriate.

A commenter said the host’s move to charge for welcome dinner was “super tacky” and said that the dinner should be paid for by the hosts. Another user suggested skipping the welcome dinner and only attending the wedding ceremony. “You could probably get your dinner for less than €40,” the account wrote.

Some users, however, defended the couple and suggested they could have opted for a simpler gathering. “If they couldn’t afford both the wedding and the welcome dinner, they should have hosted a small reception with drinks and appetisers instead,” the user wrote.

Others were however more critical and they argued that guests should not have to pay for any part of a wedding.

Recently, another Reddit user shared the dilemma of a flower girl dress that ruined a long-term friendship.

A woman narrated how her friend invited her five-year-old daughter to be a flower girl. Trouble started when the bride made unpleasant comments about the dress, which escalated into a fierce quarrel. The whole situation finally boiled over and left both guests absent from the wedding and the friendship dissolved.
