Sometimes unexpected moments of kindness come when we least expect them especially in the most difficult situations. That is exactly what happened to a British tourist who found himself lost high up in the Peruvian mountains at an altitude of 15,000 feet. Separated from his group and battling snow-covered paths and thick fog, his only hope for survival became a stray dog who ‘appeared from the fog’ and led him to his destination. The incident took place in October 2022.
According to a report in the Daily Mail, El Guero Ingles was trekking the Santa Cruz circuit near Huaraz in Peru when he lost track of his group on the second day. He wandered through the mountains to find his way to Punta Union pass but thick snow and fog made it difficult for him. That is when a stray dog appeared out of nowhere, wagging its tail and leading the way.
In a video he later shared on Instagram, he could be heard asking the dog, “What on earth are you doing up here? How did you get here?” “Got a new guide, I lost my guide. We need to go somewhere up there. Ok, you lead the way. If we get lost, I’m blaming you, you are in charge now,” he added.
The dog, who seemed to be aware of the terrain, led the hiker safely toward his destination. Even though he wondered what the dog could be doing so high up, Ingles was amazed at how the dog seemed to know the route and led him to a sign pointing to his destination. “I decided to trust his knowledge of the mountain,” Ingles said according to Italian newspaper La Stampa.
After reaching the top of the mountain together, Ingles and the canine waited for the rest of the hikers to arrive. The dog remained close and when the group continued their journey, it stayed by their side. When they reached their camp, another dog was waiting for them. The two animals joined the hikers for the rest of the 13.5-mile trek.
According to a local, dogs in the area often follow hikers up the mountains as if they were trained guides. Ingles’ Instagram video received admiration from social media users in the comment section, with many praising the dog’s remarkable act.
One user commented, “So cute !!! And clever.”
Another said, “I hope you rewarded him with good food and hugs.”
“Love this!!! One more reason dogs are indeed man’s best friend,” someone added.
