India’s ambitious urban transport initiative, the Kochi Water Metro, is gaining international recognition for its innovation and sustainability. Touted as the first-of-its-kind water metro system, it stands as a model for eco-friendly urban development. Recently, the project received a perfect 10/10 rating from Scottish vlogger Hugh, who shared his experience riding the metro. In his video, Hugh praised the metro’s features and gave viewers a glimpse into the seamless and scenic journey across the waters of Kochi.

The video opens to show Hugh entering the metro station and approaching the ticket counter to get a one-way pass from Fort Kochi to the High Court, which only costs him Rs 40. As he makes his way to the platform, Hugh finds the boat-like metro already waiting. Visibly impressed, he highlights several standout features: sleek design, onboard charging points, aesthetic interiors, spotlessness, scenic water views, and impressive punctuality—all of which contribute to his glowing review.

After a quick ride on the metro train, Hugh couldn’t help but give a 10/10 to the luxury ride on the water, which took about 20 minutes to reach the destination. “$0.50 water metro in India,” he captioned the video, which has already amassed over 6 million views. Many took to the comment section and joined in to praise the water metro services in Kochi. One wrote, “Happy that you enjoyed the journey,” while another added, “It’s a government initiative. One of its kind in India.”

“I must acknowledge that our brothers in the South are doing a good job in preserving and protecting their public spaces,” another comment read. As more travellers and locals stumble upon the unique facility, the Kochi Metro Station is slowly evolving into a growing mode of transportation. Earlier this month, the metro services closed in on serving four million passengers.

Earlier, industrialist Anand Mahindra also gave a shout-out to the metro services, calling it a “breakthrough in citizen-friendly infrastructure.” Sharing a video of the water metro, he wrote, “A city defined by its waterways, so no wonder it hosts a Water Metro. Not the first water-based transport but the first to cleverly name it a ‘Metro’ and capture the imagination of both its citizens and tourists. And a good looking, comfortable, and emission-free boat to top it all.”

The country’s first water metro system, Kochi Water Metro, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 25, 2023, with commercial operations starting the next day. The transportation system connects ten islands around the city, reducing traffic, providing clean energy, and offering a convenient mode of transportation.
