Accompanied by his friends, the Gainesville resident searched for snakes on December 18 before a diamondback rattlesnake found him. Once bitten, the young influencer quickly began filming himself. David Humplett tried to stay calm during the severe situation. He jokingly complimented the snake after the bite. “What a meme dude! Cool snake. Big diamondback. GG (good game),” he said. Humplett, however, acknowledged that he was in some big trouble. He described the diamondback rattlesnake as the ‘worst’ snake that one can be bitten by in Florida. Humplett tried to be positive about the situation and suggested they should get some photographs. “Let’s get the pictures of it first. I mean, we’re already screwed anyways,” he said.
Following the life-threatening encounter, David Humplett was raised to a Cross City fire station from where he was taken to UF Health Shands by helicopter. Recounting the incident, the influencer claimed he understood the situation was indeed ‘really bad’. “My reaction was just like dang it, this is really bad. I might lose my leg. It was pretty scary because my whole body went numb head to toe,” he said as per WCJB.com. A familiar face was waiting for Humplett at the hospital, his wife Emma Rynear who worked as a UF Health nurse. Speaking about her husband’s accident she said, “Internally, I’m panicking but externally, I’m reassuring him, ‘You’re going to be fine.’”
The doctors at the UF Health Shands Hospital had to give David Humplett 88 antivenom injections into his leg. Two weeks after the incident, the young influencer remains in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit. Despite the ordeal, Humplett did not hold any hard feelings against his assailant. The 25-year-old claimed the snake saw him as a threat and was only trying to defend himself. Humplett is now excited to get back into the wild after getting discharged from the hospital.
