The internet has been fascinated by an Indian travel vlogger’s stunning video of Indonesia’s Ijen Crater, where a remarkable blue fire lights up the night. The video, shared with his 1.1 million Instagram followers, transports viewers to the centre of Java’s natural treasures while showcasing the strange splendour of this uncommon volcanic phenomenon.
The vlogger is shown in the video hiking up the volcano at night while wearing gas masks to protect himself from the sulphurous air. A captivating sight that is exclusive to this volcanic location is produced by the eerie flashing blue flames along the rocky road.
Furthermore, the vlogger detailed his experience in the caption, describing the strenuous walk that started at 1 AM in subfreezing temperatures. “Within minutes of hiking, I was sweating inside my jacket. The trail was steep, my legs already burning, but the cold wind on my face kept me going,” he explained in his post. His guide told him that they had to go down into the crater before dawn to see the blue flames when they arrived at the summit in total darkness.
“The descent was rough, and as we got closer, thick smoke filled the air. Even with a mask on, I could feel the sulfur burning my throat. Breathing felt heavy, almost suffocating. But then, through the haze – I saw it,” the vlogger further added in his post.
The vlogger described the scene as “something from another world,” and wrote: “A strange, almost unreal blue flame flickering in the darkness. It wasn’t loud or wild, just silently burning.”
As the sun rose, the vlogger and his group ascended once more, moving from the flaming crater below to the serene blue lake at the summit. “From fire to peace in a matter of hours. Hard but 100% worth it,” the vlogger ended his post.
Within a few hours, the video has garnered over 80,000 views. The clip has also impressed several internet users.
A user said, “I saw a documentary about this place on youtube, now I’m watching your reel… Definitely I have to go and experience it someday.”
Another commented, “This is CRAZYYYY. Unbelievable stuff.”
“It’s beautiful to witness something like this,” a user on Instagram stated.
“This has been on my bucket list for so long. In shaa Allah this year I will tick it off,” another user wrote.
Indonesia’s Ijen Crater: Reason for the Blue Flame
The breathtaking blue fire of Ijen Crater, which is a part of the Ijen UNESCO Global Geopark, is a unique occurrence that results from sulphuric gases burning when they come into contact with oxygen.
Blue fire, which is only visible at night because sunlight obscures the effect, occurs as a result of the high sulphur concentrations and extremely high temperatures (over 360°C), in contrast to the usual volcanic eruptions that produce red or orange flames.
The world’s most acidic lake, Kawah Ijen, distinguished by its vivid turquoise colour, is also located within the crater. UNESCO claims that intricate geological processes, including hydrothermal activity, rock-fluid exchanges, and magmatic interactions, are responsible for its distinctive colour.
The region’s ecological and geological value is further enhanced by the nearby Belambangan Biosphere Reserve, which was named a UNESCO site in 2016.
