An 83-year-old Bengaluru resident’s determination and civic responsibility have taken the internet by storm. Surya Narayana and his wife have called the city’s HSR Layout home for several years. In recent times, however, the erratic waste management services have failed to keep the locality’s streets clean. The 83-year-old has now taken it upon himself to sweep the street and the surrounding areas cluttered with leaves and debris.

The Bengaluru Post has shared a clip of Narayana clearing the roads on X (formerly Twitter). “Meet Mr. Surya Narayan (83), a true inspiration from HSR Layout! He spends 1-2 hours daily cleaning his street, as BBMP skips routine clean-ups. A reminder of community spirit & a call for accountability. Bengaluru deserves better!” read the post.

Netizens couldn’t help but react to Surya Narayana’s heroics in the post’s comments section. One of them wrote, “Salute to this great man!” Another claimed that he often met Narayana on the road. “Yep have known him for many years, he stays at the other end of my road I stay and always greets me with a smile when I go for a run,” he wrote.

One netizen added, “Great dedication to cleanliness.” Another user commented, “Great service by a senior citizen. However, this is embarrassing for the Govt bodies.”

One more wrote, “Great senior citizen of Bangalore Mr Surya Naryan must be honoured with pride.”

Amid Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike’s (BBMP) lack of action, Surya Narayana emerged as an unlikely hero. On a rainy Friday morning, the 83-year-old Bengaluru resident was spotted sweeping the streets and clearing clogged drains. His hard work sparked the interest of a member of the Community Task Force named Madhusudhan. He asked Surya why he was putting up with this.

As per the Bangalore Mirror, the old man responded, “BBMP workers rarely show up to clean the street in front of my house. I now sweep twice or even thrice a day because of the rains.” Speaking further, Narayana remarked, “They’ve made it a habit to avoid this stretch, thinking I will clean it up anyway.”

While most individuals of Surya Narayana’s age would prefer resting, the 83-year-old continues to inspire people towards a cleaner India. His response to the lack of government action is a testimony to his values. It remains to be seen if the BBMP ensures this problem is resolved in the future.
