A video of locals looting refined oil from an overturned tanker in Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi has gone viral on social media. The incident occurred Tuesday morning near Kathora village on the Varanasi-Lucknow highway.
In the footage, shared by an X user, people are seen scooping the refined oil out of the mud. Instead of helping the driver, the locals were rushing with buckets and cans to collect the spilled oil.
The caption read, “Uttar Pradesh: A tanker full of refined oil overturned in Amethi district, people filtered out the refined oil from the mud and took it away.”

Social media reactions were mixed. A user joked, “There is a saying: If you get oil for free and you don’t have a vessel, then take it in your pallu, something will come out when you squeeze it. That is what is happening.”

Another commented, “Look at it positively: so much oil must have been used instead of going to waste. If they were able to extract refined oil that was not spoiled, it’s good that they took it.”

Responding to the incident, Kamarouli police reached the site. SHO Mukesh Kumar said the injured driver, identified as Ramraj, a resident of Bahadurpur Haidergarh in Barabanki, was rushed to the nearby Jagdishpur Trauma Centre, where he is currently undergoing treatment.
This is not the first such event.
Earlier in 2021, villagers of Madhya Pradesh’s Shivpuri district collected petrol in plastic bottles and containers after a fuel tanker overturned in Pohri due to overspeeding.
