Prince William and Prince George were seen sharing a rare father-son moment at a major sports event on Wednesday. The royal duo attended the Champions League quarterfinal match between Aston Villa and Paris Saint-Germain, where they passionately cheered for the English side, exchanging smiles, fist pumps and bursts of laughter throughout the game.
The UK royals had gathered at the packed Parc des Princes stadium in Paris, to join fans in extending support for Aston Villa. The team is said to be the Prince of Wales’ favourite.
They were photographed all fired up and delighted when Aston Villa took an early lead through Morgan Rogers. However, Paris Saint-Germain staged a thrilling comeback with three stunning goals to secure the win.
According to the Page 6 report, Prince William was also seen greeting the players and coaches outside the locker room ahead of the match. When asked if the outing was a planned “guys night”, the heir to the British throne quipped: “Well, I’ve got my son here as well, so I’m on best behaviour.”
“But I thought, it’s been 43 years since anything like this has happened in my generation as a Villa fan, and I want George to experience a night out away from home in a big European competition,” he was quoted as saying by Page 6.
Sky News reported that Prince William was wearing his “lucky clothes” for the match. He was captured hugging his 11-year-old son in celebration after Rogers gave Aston Villa a first-half lead.
Paris’ comeback followed with goals from Désiré Doué, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and Nuno Mendes to seal the win. Shortly after Aston Villa’s opener, Doué was able to curl a stunning shot into the top corner, levelling the match for Paris.
The outcome defied Prince William’s prediction, as he had told the media he expected a 2-1 victory for Villa.
During the event, Prince William was also asked if he tried to sway his children’s opinion in favour of Villa. He remarked that while he’s a bit biased, he’s open to whichever team they choose to support.
