Comedian and actor Vir Das, who once faced legal trouble over his “Two Indias” monologue at the Kennedy Center in Washington, has now weighed in on the India’s Got Latent controversy. As host Samay Raina and guest judges Ranveer Allahbadia, Jaspreet Singh, Apoorva Mukhija, and Ashish Chanchlani find themselves in the eye of the storm, Das has offered his take on the uproar.
Taking to his Instagram Story, Vir Das said that audience is free to debate what makes good comedy, adding that feedback has consequences on a comedian’s career.
“The audience is always welcome to debate what good comedy is. A good artist will take their feedback head down, mouth shut, and maybe evolve. Either way the consequences of your comedy on your career and audience are pretty instant. That’s a natural process,” Vir Das wrote on Instagram.

He added, “But we are also watching a bunch of irrelevant mainstream media anchors bordering extinction coming together to take down new media that gets millions more views, longer interviews, and far more impact than their bloated studios and fat salary at 1 per cent of the cost. Whether you like the new media or not is irrelevant.”
“That’s also what’s happening here. And while they debate what good comedy is, please debate what good journalism is, and the news that they should be doing, the questions they should be asking, and who they should be asking them to,” he further said.
On February 10, Guwahati Police registered an FIR against Samay Raina and all the judges on his show India’s Got Latent under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for “promoting obscenity and engaging in sexually explicit discussions”.
The FIR has been registered under sections – 79/95/294/296 of BNS 2023 read with Sec 67 of IT Act, 2000, read with Section 4/7 of Cinematograph Act 1952 read with Section 4/6 of Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act.
The Maharashtra Cyber Department has filed an FIR against Samay Raina, Ranveer Allahbadia, and others, while also issuing summons to nearly 30 guests who have appeared on the show since its first episode.
Meanwhile, Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske raised the issue in the Lok Sabha during Zero Hour, calling for stricter regulations and guidelines for content on social media platforms.
