Many people assume that vegetarians would struggle to survive in China because of the country’s popular image as a place where people mostly eat meat, seafood and unusual animal-based dishes. A video shared by an Indian living in China offers a very different picture that is catching people’s attention online.

In the video titled “Can Vegetarians REALLY Survive in China? (It’s Not What You Think!),” Indian YouTuber Atharva Maheshwari explores the availability of vegetarian food while living in China. Though he is based in Guangzhou, he takes viewers to a large vegetable market in the city of Kunming. The video aims to show that vegetarian food is not as hard to find in China as many people believe. As he walks through the market, he points out the wide range of fresh vegetables, fruits and local produce that are available.

“Is China a vegetarian’s worst nightmare? I’m Atharva Maheshwari, an Indian vegetarian living in China, and I’m here to debunk the myths!” the YouTuber wrote in the caption of the video.

“Forget the stereotypes you’ve heard about Chinese food being all meat. The reality is far more delicious and surprising,” he added.

Throughout the video, Maheshwari gives a close look at the many vegetables and fruits sold in the market at affordable prices. He points out that it is a proper vegetarian-friendly space and even calls it “a true vegetarian paradise.”

The video shows several vegetables that would be familiar to Indian viewers such as bitter gourd, bottle gourd, sweet corn, green onions, carrots, ginger, garlic, red onions, okra, brinjal and sweet potato. But it also features several kinds of Chinese greens and exotic produce like bok choy, gai lan (Chinese broccoli), lotus root, bamboo shoots and a large collection of mushrooms including shiitake, enoki and wood ear.

Maheshwari also shows viewers around the fruit section of the market, which is full of fresh fruits such as bananas, guava, watermelon, oranges, peaches, litchi, mangoes, dragon fruit, pomelos and several others.

“This is the ultimate guide for any vegetarian or vegan planning a trip to China,” he shared.

China, despite its image abroad, is the world’s largest producer of vegetables. According to Adda247, the country accounts for nearly 50 per cent of the world’s total vegetable production. This comes to around 749 million tons of vegetables produced every year. The high output is made possible by the country’s large landmass, rich and varied soil conditions, different types of climate and steady government investments in agriculture.
