A woman from the US turned to the popular Chinese app, Rednote, to find her long lost friend, Simon. In a video, Katharina Celia explained when she was in 7th or 8th grade, a Chinese student named Simon joined her school in Iowa.
They quickly became close friends that year, but after he moved back to China, they lost touch. She felt sad and heartbroken during the time, and claimed she misses him a lot. To her surprise, just a day after her video went viral, she was able to reconnect with Simon, as one of his friends came across the video.
In the video, she said, “Guys I need your help. When I was in 7th or 8th grade, back in 2017-2018, there was a Chinese foreign student at my school. I went to a private Catholic school in Iowa. There was this boy, his English name was Simon, that’s all I remember but we were best friends for that year, but then he moved back to China and we couldn’t communicate and I was heartbroken because we were such good friends. I need all netizens on this app to find him. Simon, I miss you.”
According to the South China Morning Post, the woman also shared an old photo of Simon in her video, which was seen by someone close to him and passed the information to Simon. Less than a day later, a user commented on the video and introduced himself as Simon. He was amazed to find his old friend again after so many years and thanked everyone on Rednote who helped bring them back together.
In an interview with The Star, the woman mentioned that she finally connected with Simon through video call. She also clarified that, despite many users jokingly suggesting them to “get together,” Katharina Celia said that their relationship was just a friendship, and no romance was involved.
She said, “After all these years, we are reconnecting, chatting and reminiscing about old times. Maybe one day, we will meet again here in the US. I have been using translation apps to read every comment in Chinese. Many people wish for us to get together, but for me, this is just a very special friendship.”
Simon is currently working as a designer in the US.
