A US-based social media influencer recently sparked online chatter after referring to Chiku (Sapodilla), a popular tropical fruit, as an “exotic potato.” But that’s not all—she also described its taste as resembling a pear in syrup.
In a now-viral Instagram video, influencer Sweety Craft is seen slicing the fruit while sharing her thoughts. “I don’t understand why people eat this exotic potato raw,” she remarked, adding that its skin sinks inward when pressed.
Cutting it open, she described the inside as “slightly slimy orange flesh with a few seeds” and compared its consistency to butter due to its long fibres. After taking a bite, she concluded, “It tastes like a pear in syrup,” seemingly unaware that Chiku is a staple in many tropical countries.
Sharing the video on Instagram, the woman wrote in the caption, “I Didn’t Understand Why People Eat This Exotic Potato Raw.”
The video quickly went viral, sparking a wave of reactions online, especially from Indian viewers. Many couldn’t believe how Chiku had been described.
One Instagram user quipped, “I have never seen a Chiku insulted so badly.” Another joked, “White girl discovers Chikoo.” A third chimed in with, “Chikoooooo hai didi.”
Meanwhile, some comments took a more humorous approach, with one saying, “Chikoo crying in the corner.” The internet had a field day reacting to the influencer’s unexpected take on the beloved tropical fruit.
One user humorously remarked, “The whitest reel I saw today.” Another wrote, “Behen, it’s a Chikoo! They’re ruining my favourite fruit.” Someone else quipped, “White people discovering Chikoo wasn’t on my agenda today.”
Another comment playfully noted, “Chikoo ko aloo bana diya.”
Interestingly, some users drew a connection between the fruit and Indian cricketer Virat Kohli, who is often called “Chiku,” a nickname given by his coach. One Instagram user jokingly commented, “That’s Virat.”
The video has gathered around 60 lakh views since it was shared on Instagram.
