Workplace culture is often a hot topic, especially when it comes to balancing career ambitions with personal life. Employees frequently find themselves at a crossroads, having to choose between professional success and personal commitments. In a recent viral post, Nick Huber, founder of Somewhere, shared a compelling story about the tough choices faced by a lawyer working at one of the world’s top law firms.
According to Huber, the lawyer dedicated five years to the firm, consistently putting in gruelling 80-hour workweeks. By the age of 32, his relentless efforts had earned him an impressive salary of nearly $900K (approximately Rs 7.84 crore) per year.
“I spoke to a guy last year who spent 5 years at a big prestigious law firm. One of the top firms in the world working litigation. He laid down 80-hour weeks for years and was making damn near $900k as a 32-year-old,” Huber wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
There came a time when the lawyer was assigned a major case in another city when his wife was eight months pregnant. He requested a non-transfer so that he could be present for the birth of his child. The senior partner at the firm refused his request.
“The partner gave him a lecture and told him he needed to work through it. Just like he had done and the other partners. He couldn’t get the exception,” Huber revealed.
The lawyer was told “it was either miss the birth of his child or walk away” from the job. Faced with this tough choice, he chose to quit on the spot and “told his boss to f*** off” and made a “scene.”
“Sad deal all around. He had made it his life work to get that job. Ivy League. Thousands of hours of work to make it happen. Grew up a poor kid from the south side of Chicago. Crazy world we live in,” Huber concluded.

In the comment section, many social media users expressed their support for the lawyer’s decision.
One user commented, “At least he made the right choice in the end. His kid will thank him,” while another wrote, “Family above all else. Dude made the right decision.”
A person expressed, “These are the kinds of men I respect. When he starts interviewing with other firms it will be apparent that his integrity is important to him. He’ll land on his feet in no time Integrity over everything.”
“Sounds like a win if he saved money and didn’t live like a fool. Probably got another solid job and is set for life assuming he invested,” an individual wrote.
