A former IT employee detailed nine years of struggles, blaming minimal salary hikes and rigid policies in his company.

A Bengaluru-based software engineer has shared his experience of working at one of India’s largest IT companies in a Reddit post and compared it to “unchained slavery”.
The professional said that after spending nine years at the organisation, his salary was just ₹35,000 per month, showing little growth or reward for his time.
He explained that the low pay was due to poor increments, often limited to single digits and a flawed progression system within the company. Employees were moved to higher sub-levels without any raise in salary or additional responsibilities. He said this system wasted many valuable years of his career.
The engineer highlighted other issues with the company’s policies. Employees had to pay for parking on campus, canteen food was not subsidized and they had to meet a required number of work hours physically.
This rule forced many to visit the office on weekends just to swipe their ID cards to meet the hours. The high cost of cafeteria food, like ₹40 for a glass of juice, made it difficult for employees to afford meals.
He joined the company as a fresher in 2008 and believed that such practices were common in the IT industry.
However, when he left in 2017 and joined an international Big 4 firm, he saw a huge difference in how employees were treated. His new job pays him ₹1.7 lakh per month, nearly 400% more than his previous salary.
“At my old job, salaries were never adjusted for market trends,” he said, adding that his current company ensures pay matches industry standards.
The techie criticized the low annual salary hikes of 4-6%, which barely matched inflation. Over time, this left employees significantly underpaid compared to others in the industry.
He also pointed out a transportation fee of ₹3,200 and said employees were made to cover expenses that should have been handled by the company.
Several people in the Reddit thread supported his claims and shared their similar experiences, calling the company’s practices exploitative.
The post has triggered a larger conversation about working conditions in India’s IT sector. Many are urging companies to change their policies to keep talented employees and improve workplace satisfaction.
