A British MP has stirred controversy by voicing his displeasure with a Bengali signboard in London. A photograph of a signboard at London’s Whitechapel station written in Bangla script was posted by Rupert Lowe, a member of the Reform UK Party. The Great Yarmouth member of parliament criticised the usage of Bengali in the capital of the United Kingdom, stating that signs need to be shown “in English, and English only.”
“This is London – the station name should be in English, and English only,” Lowe, a member of the Reform UK Party captioned his post on X (formerly Twitter). In the now-viral photo, an English-written signboard is hanging next to a Bengali-language one. The photo was shared on February 9 and it has racked up over 3.9 million views.
Lowe’s post garnered notice because of his divisive opinions on the use of English in public.
Furthermore, Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, the CEO of Tesla, the owner of X, and a member of Donald Trump’s government, was among many who backed Lowe’s ideas. Musk responded to Lowe’s post by writing, “Yes.”
Other users of X were less amiable.
The Labour Party’s Mike Tapp also replied to the post with the two words, “Snowflake alert.”
To which Lowe shot back saying, “I wonder whether your constituents in Dover and Deal approve of having Bengali signs plastered around parts of their capital city. I suspect not.”
Meanwhile, Lowe was reminded by a few X users that his demand should be reciprocated.
A user wrote, “Go to another country where English is not their spoken language and I’m sure you’ll appreciate seeing signs in English. Works both ways.”
Another questioned sarcastically, “I assume you have a problem with English signs in Wales then?”
Rupert Lowe has previously advocated for English dominance in the United Kingdom. Two weeks ago, he stated in a LinkedIn post that immigrants who refuse to learn English need to be deported.
“If you come to our country and refuse to learn English, refuse to work, refuse to contribute, refuse to integrate, refuse to live by our laws – then you should be deported. And we should make no apologies for that,” the lawmaker from Britain wrote.
