A company in Abu Dhabi had to pay AED 110,400 (approximately Rs 26 lakh) as “unpaid wages” to an employee after sending an offer letter but never allowing him to begin working.
The money was paid after the employee filed a lawsuit against the company, claiming that his salary was unfairly withheld from 11 November 2024 to 7 April 2025.
According to a report by Khaleej Times, the man had signed a fixed-term employment contract that offered him a basic monthly salary of AED 7,200, with total compensation amounting to AED 24,000. The agreement covered the period from 11 November 2024 to 7 April 2025.

However, despite the contract being in place, the man was never actually allowed to start work. The employee later filed a legal complaint, arguing that his salary for the contracted period had been unfairly withheld.
The court ruled in his favour, emphasising that employers are legally bound to honour employment agreements, even if the job never officially starts.
The court said, “It was clear from the wage report, the employment contract, and the supporting documents submitted through the case management system that the delay in starting work was due to the employer,” according to a report in the local newspaper Emarat Al Youm.
While the employer argued that the employee “did not report to duty and went on leave,” and was therefore not entitled to salary, the court found no proof that a formal inquiry had been conducted regarding any absence and concluded that the delay in starting the job was due to the company’s own actions.
