Former US National Security Advisor John Bolton has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges related to alleged misuse of classified documents. The indictment accuses him of sharing sensitive information with two of his relatives for possible use in his book. According to Reuters, the relatives mentioned in the indictment are believed to be Bolton’s wife and daughter.
Prosecutors allege that Bolton sent e-mails containing information gleaned from his meetings with senior US officials, discussions with foreign leaders and intelligence briefings. These reportedly also included notes of confidential nature.
What charges were leveled against Bolton?
The indictment further states that Bolton and his relatives had discussed including some of the material in a book project. Bolton had reportedly referred to both of them as his editors in his conversation. According to the indictment, Bolton wrote that he was talking to the (book publisher) because he had the right of first refusal.
What did the former NSA say in his defense?
In response to the allegations, Bolton issued a statement defending his record and denying any wrongdoing. Bolton said that for four decades I have dedicated my life to America’s foreign policy and national security. I will never compromise on those goals.
The matter came to light in August when the FBI searched Bolton’s Maryland home and his office in Washington DC as part of a federal investigation. According to court documents, agents allegedly seized numerous confidential and secret files. Which contained information related to weapons of mass destruction, and the American mission in the United Nations. The unsealed warrant also revealed that investigators had long raised questions about whether Bolton illegally retained classified documents even after leaving office.
Trump’s statement regarding the allegations against Bolton
Donald Trump appeared surprised when asked about the impeachment of Bolton. Talking to reporters at the White House, he said that I think he is a bad person. There has been a long feud between Trump and Bolton since Bolton’s departure from the White House in 2019. A lawyer for John Bolton said the former national security adviser did not share or store any information illegally.
