Israel Palestine Conflict: There has been an uproar over US President Donald Trump’s comment that Jordan and Egypt accept Palestinians more than Gaza. This statement has become a cause of concern among the residents of Gaza and its neighbors. The proposal has raised fears of Gaza’s 2.3 million Palestinians being pushed out to the sea and raised concerns among Arab countries, which have long grappled with the destabilizing effects of such displacement.
Palestinians have long been haunted by the “Nakba,” or disaster, when 700,000 Palestinians were driven from their homes during Israel’s creation in 1948. Many of these people or their descendants are still living in refugee camps in Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, while some came and settled in Gaza. Israel denies that they were forcibly expelled.
What has happened during this conflict in Gaza?
In the recent conflict, Israel carried out bombings and ground attacks in Gaza, destroying urban areas. Palestinian and United Nations officials say that there is no longer any safe area left in Gaza. Most Gaza residents have already been displaced multiple times by Israel’s offensive, which followed Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which killed 1,200 people.
Many Palestinian residents of Gaza have said they are unwilling to leave, even if they had the chance, because they fear doing so would lead to permanent displacement, as happened in 1948. Israel had asked Palestinians living north of Gaza to move to southern areas, but as the attack escalated, Israel asked them to move towards Rafah.
What do the Arabs, Western countries and the United Nations say?
Since the beginning of the conflict, Arab governments, particularly Egypt and Jordan, have said that Palestinians should not be evicted from their homes, as they seek to create an independent future state that would include the West Bank and Gaza. The Israeli attack could further reduce the prospects of Palestinian return, further weakening the prospects for a two-state solution.
Israel’s Foreign Minister, Israel Katz, said on 16 February 2024 that Israel was not planning to deport Palestinians from Gaza. He said that Israel will coordinate with Egypt so that Palestinian refugees are not harmed. However, the statements of some Israeli leaders are fueling the fear of a new Nakba in Palestine and Arab countries.
