‘Trump administration’s role is important in enhancing Quad’, said S Jaishankar, expressed this hope

S Jaishankar On America: America’s newly elected President Donald Trump is known for the expansion of the Quad group during his first administration. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Friday (6 December 2024) that the Quad had developed under the Trump administration and there will be no reduction in its support in future also. Jaishankar has said this in the India-Japan Forum.

Quad has now become the largest and most comprehensive inter-governmental coordination mechanism. Jaishankar said that the Quad was revived in 2017 during Trump’s first term. As President of America, Trump is credited with reviving this group. S Jaishankar said, “In 2017, it was the first year of the Trump administration, when it was started at the ministerial level. Then in 2019, under the Trump administration, it was elevated from the deputy minister to the foreign minister level.”

Trump’s perspective on Quad was considered important

Jaishankar said Trump’s approach to India and its partners that “everyone plays their part” fully applies to the Quad. He described it as a system in which every country plays its part. Responding to questions raised in Japan regarding India being considered the weak link of the Quad, Jaishankar said that it is normal for the four countries to sometimes agree and sometimes disagree.

He said, “It is sometimes said in our country that Japan is the weak link of the Quad and remember, in the first round of the Quad, we felt that Australia had left it and Australia also felt that it was ready to leave it.” Before India will leave it.” Jaishankar said that the Quad is growing and its agenda has now become a comprehensive inter-governmental coordination mechanism.

India and Japan’s shared experience in relations with China

India and Japan have shared experiences due to their proximity to China. Jaishankar said that the trade relationship between India and China has been very strong, but despite this, problems related to trade imbalance and access to markets remain. He said that the tension arising on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in 2020 affected India-China relations.

The Foreign Minister said, “Our entire relationship was based on the fact that there will be peace and stability in the border areas, and for this we had made agreements. In 2020, China sent a lot of troops to the border areas and we also made counter-deployments. “We were forced to take it.” He also said that both the countries negotiated for four years and six months to move the armies away from each other.

Possibility of India-Japan cooperation in semiconductor sector

Jaishankar also talked about the possibilities of cooperation in the semiconductor sector between India and Japan. Both countries are taking steps to promote the semiconductor industry and are working towards an important partnership in this sector with Taiwan. He said, “Japan is reviving its semiconductor sector and India has also announced a mission in this sector after a long gap. It is interesting that both the countries are also working with Taiwan and I look forward to it.” “I see this as an important partnership.”
