Many individuals in India are finding success in farming, and Jitendra Mann from Sonipat, Haryana, is a perfect example. After working in the TCS for years, he decided to leave and explore farming. Along with his wife, Sarla, Jitendra started their brand, Husband Wife Farm, which had a turnover of Rs 30 lakh in FY24. His decision to move from cities like Chennai, Bengaluru and Delhi was due to the rising health concerns. In his early 40s, he was battling high blood pressure and joint pain. Tired of stressful city life, he and Sarla returned to their village, where they now enjoy a simple and healthy life through farming.

Speaking with Better India, Jitendra explained, “I was a workaholic during my early 20s, often being the last one to leave office at 1 am. By my early 40s, I was suffering from high blood pressure (BP) and extreme joint pains. I would commute via the metro and sit all day at a desk. I felt healthy, but once I started medication for high blood pressure, I realised I was not. My blood pressure was 160. It was a wake-up call for me. After starting the medication, I felt that this was going to be my new normal.”

Jitendra Mann started an organic moringa farm from his terrace and made sure to use the right technology to preserve their full nutrition. He noticed that many farmers were using dirty or polluted water to grow crops. He felt concerned because a large number of people in Delhi eat food grown in those fields. He also observed how health problems, which were earlier common only among older people, are now affecting youngsters and children.

Speaking about their process, Sarla shares, “After plucking stems with leaves, we wash them twice and bundle seven to nine stems together so that each leaf is separated for easier drying. We dry the leaves under large fans and also in a controlled greenhouse setup, where energy gets trapped and the temperature is 8-10 degrees hotter than outside. After 12 hours, the leaves become crunchy and we separate them from the stems. We then make a coarse powder in a pulveriser and remove stalks before packaging.”

The couple now earn Rs 650 from each 200 gram pack of moringa powder they sell. Every month, their total sales reach around Rs 3.5 lakh. In each season, they earn close to Rs 10 lakh from just one acre of land. Due to their focus on quality, Husband Wife Farm’s moringa powder became popular in big cities such as Delhi, Gurugram, Bengaluru and Mumbai.

Thinking about their journey so far, Jitendra Mann feels that leaving city life and shifting to their village was a wise decision. He believes they are now living a better life, staying healthy and enjoying clean surroundings away from pollution.
