Grief knows no boundaries, not even for animals. A heartbreaking video recently shared by Indian Forest Service officer Parveen Kaswan reveals the deep sorrow of a mother elephant dragging her dead calf’s body. This emotional footage highlights the powerful bond between these gentle giants. The video has gone viral, stirring strong emotions across the internet.
The mother elephant, visibly distressed, struggles to accept her calf’s death, dragging the lifeless body with each step.
Witnesses reported that she stayed with her calf for days, refusing to leave, a poignant reminder of the emotional depth elephants are known for. This tragic scene has ignited reflection on the emotional lives of these animals and the enduring connections they form.
“Elephant Mother not able to comprehend death of her calf. She keeps dragging body for some time – at times for days. They are so like us – they are so humane,” wrote IFS officer Kaswan who shared the video.
Kaswan further shared that such emotional responses from elephants are not rare and that he has seen similar moments during his years of field service. “This is not our first such case, it is filmed by ADFO Shri Jayanta Mondal. I personally have seen few such instances in last many years of field service. At times the whole herd do the ritual – that looks like a funeral procession,” he shared in another post.
