A government school in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, had a 0% pass rate in Class 12 board exams, with all 14 students failing the examination.

A storm of concern has erupted in Uttarakhand’s education circles after a government school in Dehradun district delivered a result so dismal, it has prompted urgent official enquiry. The Government Inter College in Badripur, located in the Pachhadun area, recorded a 0% pass rate in its Class 12 board examinations, meaning none of its 14 students managed to pass.
The results of the Uttarakhand Board Examination were declared on April 19, revealing stark contrasts in performance across government institutions. While many state-run schools celebrated commendable outcomes, Badripur Inter College became a glaring exception. Most disturbing, according to officials, was that every student failed in the subject of Chemistry, raising suspicions about the quality of instruction and the effectiveness of internal academic oversight.
The Class 10 board results from the same school told a slightly more optimistic story: 61 of 66 students passed, a statistic that stands in sharp contrast to the complete washout at the Class 12 level. This result led the education department to question what went wrong specifically in Class 12, and more importantly, why.
“This is a matter of serious concern,” said Vinita Kathayat Negi, Block Education Officer of Vikasnagar. A notice has been issued to the school principal, demanding a detailed explanation. Only then, a full report will be compiled and submitted, she said.
She added that while the state’s overall performance in the board exams was encouraging – with a pass percentage of 88% in Class 10 and 77% in Class 12 – the Badripur school’s result stands out as a red flag. The department is taking this issue seriously. We are committed to completing the investigation at the earliest, she further said.
Across the state, a total of 2,23,403 students appeared in this year’s board exams, which ran from February 21 to March 11. Notably, Kamal Singh Chauhan from Bageshwar and Jatin Joshi from Haldwani emerged as toppers in Class 10, while Anushka Rana of Government Inter College Barasi in Dehradun secured the highest marks in Class 12.
These individual successes, however, offer little solace to the students and families of Badripur Inter College. The complete failure of a class, especially in one subject, has triggered questions about the competence of faculty and whether the students received adequate academic support throughout the year.
“The failure of all students in Chemistry suggests systemic issues,” said a local education analyst. It is not just about the students. It points to deeper flaws – perhaps in teacher preparedness, teaching methodology, or even curriculum delivery, he said.
For years, government schools in Uttarakhand faced scrutiny over resource allocation, staff training, and academic outcomes. The Badripur incident could well be the tipping point that brings those long-standing concerns to the fore once again.
