A Tesla engineer and manager, Jared Ottmann, was fired after he criticised Elon Musk for a social media post referencing Nazi leaders, The New York Times reported. Ottmann had expressed his concerns both internally at Tesla and publicly on LinkedIn about Musk’s remarks, which he found offensive.

The controversy began after Musk attended a post-ceremony rally for Donald Trump. During the event, he took the stage, beat his chest and extended his arm straight out. The gesture led to a backlash on social media, where many compared his gesture to a Nazi salute. In response to the criticism, Musk made a post on X (formerly Twitter), where he used a pun involving the names of Nazi leaders Heinrich Himmler and Hermann Göring. He wrote, “Stop Göring your enemies” and “Bet you did Nazi that coming,” followed by a laughing-while-crying emoji.

Ottmann, who worked with Tesla’s battery suppliers, took issue with Musk’s post and voiced his concerns publicly in January. In a LinkedIn post, he wrote, “Starting in 2022 and especially the last week I’ve raised the issue internally multiple times, with managers, HR, legal compliance, investor relations. And while overwhelmingly people offer personal support, Tesla as a company has remained silent.”

It is not the first time employees at Musk’s companies have faced consequences for criticising him. According to the report, in 2022, SpaceX fired nine employees who had written an open letter condemning Musk’s behaviour on social media including his response to sexual harassment allegations against him. Some of those employees later filed unfair-labour-practice complaints with the National Labor Relations Board.

There have been other instances of dissent within Tesla as well. Last month, during a meeting at the company’s California office, employees expressed frustration over Musk’s political activities. One manager reportedly acknowledged that he, too, was discouraged by the CEO’s behaviour.

Last year, a SpaceX employee was fired after questioning whether Musk should wear company-branded clothing at political events. The employee had posted on an internal message board stating that if workers couldn’t wear political clothing at the office then company apparel should not be worn at campaign rallies either. The employee was initially locked out of internal systems but was later reinstated. However, the employee resigned a few weeks later.

Musk has also fired employees at X who criticised him. After his $44 billion takeover of the platform in 2022, several workers who posted critiques about him were dismissed.
