Age is often seen as a barrier to accomplishing things considered physically laborious, but in reality, age is not the limitation, it is the strength of the will that matters most. Fifty-seven-year-old Gauri, a resident of Sirsi in Karnataka’s Uttara Kannada district, did something that left everyone in awe with her determined efforts.

Faced with financial constraints that made it impossible for her to travel to the Maha Kumbh Mela in UP’s Prayagraj, she decided to dig a 40-foot-deep well in her courtyard instead. Gauri believed that if she couldn’t make it to Prayagraj, she could still bring ‘Ganga’ to her.

Financial Struggles Didn’t Hold Her Back

Gauri, who depends on farming for her livelihood, has a modest income. Even though she realised that the cost of travelling to Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh Mela was beyond her means, she held on to her spiritual aspirations.

A Herculean Effort

Every day, Gauri worked tirelessly for six to eight hours, digging, removing soil, and gradually deepening the hole in the ground. Despite the immense difficulty of the task, her determination drove her to complete the well in just two months, finishing it by February 15, 2025.

Experienced in Well-Digging

This wasn’t Gauri’s first experience with digging wells. She had previously dug a well for irrigation on her farmland. Additionally, she had dug wells at the Ganesh Nagar Anganwadi School in Sirsi to provide water for local villagers.

When news of the well she had dug at the Anganwadi school spread, local authorities attempted to halt her work. The district administration ordered her to stop, but she received support from Anant Kumar Hegde, the then-MP of Uttara Kannada, who ensured the well’s completion. Even today, that well quenches the thirst of the people.
