Cases of individuals with foreign objects lodged in their bodies have often grabbed attention. These range from objects being swallowed or ingested accidentally, leading to several health issues, and even death.
In a recent shocking incident, the doctors at the government hospital in Berhampur, Odisha, removed an eight-centimetre broken piece of a knife from a patient’s lung.
Santosh Das, 24, recently underwent a right thoracotomy operation at the MKCG Medical College and Hospital. During the surgical process, the doctors removed the sharp knife from his lungs. It was 2.5 cm wide and 3mm thick.
According to PTI, the broken piece of the knife remained lodged in the man’s lung for nearly three years after he was stabbed by an unknown individual in Bengaluru. Despite that, doctors stated that his operation was conducted without any complications and he is now recovering in the ICU.
Speaking about the knife, Santosh told the news agency that it entered his body after he was stabbed in Bengaluru three years ago while working as a labourer. He was stabbed in the neck, treated in a Bengaluru hospital, and remained healthy for the next two years.
However, for over a year, he had been suffering from a dry cough and fever, prompting concerns about tuberculosis. He has also completed tuberculosis therapy for nine months, but his condition has not improved. Looking at his health, his family rushed him to the hospital when he began coughing up blood.
Later, during an X-ray, the doctors found a sharp knife lodged inside his right lung. It was later confirmed via a CT scan and bronchoscopy.
“A group of around eight doctors in CTVS and anaesthesia departments, nursing officers, and para-medical staff conducted the surgery and successfully removed the sharp metal piece,” Dr Sahoo told the news agency. He added that they were surprised that the sharp metal piece did not damage his organs.
Earlier, a man from Madhya Pradesh made headlines for the same reason after the doctors reportedly removed a 16-inch bottle gourd (lauki) from his rectum.
