This Manager Feels Like A ‘Boomer’ For Asking Team To Work Till 5 PM

The manager’s post has reignited discussions around workplace expectations and employee autonomy.

Flexible working hours can boost productivity.

The debate between fixed working hours and task-based flexibility has been ongoing for years. While fixed hours provide structure and predictability, flexible schedules are often seen as a way to boost productivity and support better work-life balance. Recently, a post by a corporate manager has gone viral after they revealed that higher management instructed them to ensure employees remain at the workplace until 5 PM even if their work is finished. The post has reignited discussions around workplace expectations and employee autonomy.

In a Reddit post, the manager wrote, “My whole staff leaves early every day. Rarely is there someone there at 5 pm. We are salaried and office hours are 8:30-5, but it’s rare people are there before 9.”

He added, “That being said, I don’t mind as long as they complete their work. It frustrates me when they complain about being ‘so busy’ but then all leave, arriving at 9, having an hour’s lunch, and leaving at 4, but whatever. They’re all adults who do good work in the end.”

Looking at the employees leaving early as per the schedule, the higher management asked the manager to ensure that everyone stays till 5 pm. He continued, “I feel like a boomer making people to work till 5, but isn’t it the bare minimum and what they are obligated to do? Am I behaving like a boomer? How can I make the ship turn around? Do I care?”

The post prompted several reactions from users with strong opinions on how the manager should handle their team’s early departures.

A user commented, “You should be honest with the teammates that upper management has taken notice of them all leaving early, and you can’t do anything to protect them if they decide to take action.”

Another one wrote, “I don’t like pushing the blame game off to ‘leadership/upper management’. Have a frank conversation with your entire team.”

One of them shared, “I’d be more concerned about the productivity and let the time question take care of itself. Your statement about their complaining of “being busy” while also coming in late and leaving early is telling in that it suggests that they may not be “that” busy and could just be trying to protect their time.”

Workplace schedules determine when and how employees should allocate their time, ensuring uniform workflows and fulfilling the job duties mentioned in employment contracts.
