However, this summer, residents of the eastern United States can witness a different kind of ‘alien’ arrival: the emergence of periodical cicadas. These insects, with their unusual life cycles and striking appearance, are often perceived as otherworldly.
After 17-year dormancy, this particular insect species is set to re-emerge in 2025, potentially impacting over 13 states. Scientists warn that its arrival could have significant consequences.

These cicadas are currently active below the surface, preparing to emerge in more than 13 US states this spring. This year, the red-eyed insects are expected in New York, Georgia, Kentucky, Indiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.
Scientists report that these red-eyed insects, measuring one to one and a half inches in size, typically emerge when ground temperatures surpass 64°F. Their appearance between April and June has sparked widespread concern across America.
The last time these insects flourished, their presence became a nuisance for many. To attract females, male cicadas produce a loud, piercing sound often compared to the whir of a lawnmower.
The noise generated by these insects is so overwhelming that it has prompted numerous calls to law enforcement agencies across America. The Newberry County Sheriff’s Office in South Carolina, inundated with complaints, was compelled to issue a public statement.
Police reported numerous calls concerning an unusual aerial noise. Witnesses described it as a siren emanating from the sky or a groaning, roaring sound. However, the source was identified as cicadas, insects that emerge every spring. These intriguing creatures spend 13–17 years underground before emerging from their eggs. While the cicadas’ noise is disturbing to some, they pose no danger to humans or animals.
According to the University of Connecticut, their invasion is predicted to occur in 2025. Brood XIV, or Brood 14, represents the second largest type of cicada, measuring approximately two inches in length. Upon emergence, cicadas maintain activity for a period of four to six weeks. Subsequently, they vanish a swiftly as they appeared.
Saad Bhamla, a professor at Georgia Tech’s College of Engineering, stated, “They just climb trees and urinate.” He further remarked that their impact is not anticipated to be as significant as it was two centuries ago.
