A notice from a Gurugram housing society has drawn widespread criticism for its discriminatory stance. It instructs maids, drivers, and delivery workers to avoid using the main elevators, warning that violation of rules would result in fines. The notice, displayed within the building premises, read: “All domestic help and delivery staff, please use the service lift only.” A picture of the notice has surfaced on Reddit. Adding to the controversy, images of fine receipts issued to domestic workers have gone viral. One such receipt shows a woman named Kajal, a “maid,” being fined Rs 100 for using the main lift. Another slip documents a similar penalty imposed on a woman named Manju for not following the stated rules.
This isn’t it. The society imposes fines for as many as 20 violations. Among the listed offences are hanging laundry on balconies, taking pets through the main elevator, garden, or golf, and walking aggressive pets without a leash or muzzle.
The notice has gone immensely viral, dividing internet users into two. The share has sparked discussion online, with a majority of angry comments criticising society for discriminating against maids and delivery agents. Others commented that there was nothing wrong because the society have dedicated a lift for the people.
“This notice is available at most of the societies irrespective of the Gurgaon location, but I am seeing a penalty for the first time,” read a comment.
Another user wrote, “The most absurd rule is No. 5. I mean, what’s the alternative?”
“Classism at its peak. We are moving from castism to classism rapidly in urban societies,” said an individual.
An account stated, “Yes, it’s common in posh ones. I have physically seen residents from my society request staff to step out of the lift when they are using it. Edit: Why is everyone here pretending as if they have never faced classism in a place like NCR? All of you secretly wish for that big money life. This is what it looks like!”
“I don’t think it is wrong, they have a dedicated lift for the maid. This is good. I have seen societies which say that delivery guys should use the stairway and not the lift,” said another.
Another remarked, “I am sure there is classism involved but I would like to put these rationales. Housekeeping staff start between 8 and 10 am, which is also the time when residents leave for work. And so using the same elevators will cause congestion and delays. Service lifts have higher permissible loads so; staff can use them for bringing utility goods. I am in no way justifying classism, but we do have such arrangements in certain buildings for the above reasons.”
Do you think this notice in societies is valid?
