If you have been on the internet in the past few days, you must have come across several AI-generated images imitating the iconic Studio Ghibli animation. Thanks to ChatGPT’s image-generator update, users are now allowed to create almost any image of their choice and even convert their personal pictures into the distinct style of Studio Ghibli—the popular Japanese animation company responsible for making films like My Neighbour Totoro, Spirited Away and more.
While the latest update has already sparked a viral trend, flooding social media platforms with various Ghibli-style portraits, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has now joined the bandwagon. The central government hopped onto the viral trend on Friday, sharing a series of AI-generated animated pictures of PM Modi, reimagining some of his key moments with world leaders, major events and recent activities.
Shared on the official social media handle of My Gov India, the post begins with a picture of the PM holding the national flag, further capturing his meetings with US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron. Moving forward, one can also see PM Modi in an army uniform, delivering a speech, offering prayers at the Ayodhya Ram Mandir, flagging off the Vande Bharat train, and even on his recent visit to Anant Ambani’s Vantara, playing with the animals.
“Main character? No. He’s the whole storyline. Swipe through New India in Studio Ghibli strokes,” the caption read.
While the set of pictures left a larger section of social media users impressed, others were left divided. One wrote, “Perfect in every way,” while another added, “Amazing art, hats off to the artist.”
However, a user even mentioned the reaction of Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki and wrote, “Miyazaki doesn’t like it, and here we see people getting on this trend.”
The image-generation feature is powered by GPT-4o, which allows users to create Ghibli-style anime portraits after receiving specific prompts. The feature is currently limited to paid users, whereas others can continue to avail a minimum number of creations in a day. Amid the unexpected success of the update, CEO Sam Altman has revealed how ChatGPT’s GPUs have been “melting” due to the heavy demand, thus leading to “rate limits.”
it’s super fun seeing people love images in chatgpt.but our GPUs are melting.
we are going to temporarily introduce some rate limits while we work on making it more efficient. hopefully won’t be long!
chatgpt free tier will get 3 generations per day soon.

Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki, who has been quite critical of the AI image trend, is yet to share his latest reaction to the viral pictures.
