The Slovenian footballer once prone to anger, found a deep connection with Shiva, transforming his understanding into a meditative practice that helped him channel his anger constructively

A Slovenian footballer has become popular not just for his sport, but also for his faith. He came to India to play in the Indian Super League (ISL). People are curious to know how the player, who plays in the ISL for RG Punjab Football Club, became a devotee of Mahakal.

Luka Majcen sports a huge tattoo of Lord Shiva on his back, encircled by the Mahamrityunjaya mantra. This display of devotion to the Hindu deity by the foreign footballer has impressed many.

Majcen, who has played football for Slovenia at both Under-18 and Under-21 levels, says he first learned about Lord Shiva from the book “Shantaram”. After reading the book, a visit to a friend’s house further deepened Majcen’s faith in Mahakal.

Thirty-five-year-old Luka Majcen recounted an experience at his friend’s house in India. While his friend’s mother was performing a puja, she applied a tilak to Majcen’s forehead. Curious, Majcen inquired about its significance. His friend’s mother explained the concept of Rudra, an incarnation of Mahakal (Lord Shiva). Following this encounter, Majcen’s interest in Lord Shiva deepened, and he believes the experience profoundly impacted his life.

Majcen who represented his country up to the Under 21 level, began his senior professional career with Interblock. In 2020, he moved to India, where he joined Churchill Brothers in the I-League.

In 2021, he played for Bengaluru United in the second division of the same tournament, emerging as the highest goal scorer that season and leading his team to become champions. In 2022, he joined Gokulam Kerala, securing another trophy for the club. Following this success, Luka Majcen made his ISL debut in 2023.

Luca Majcen transformed his anger into meditation. His journey began with an online search on Google, seeking to understand the deity Shiva. Through this exploration, he discovered the meaning behind Lord Shiva’s epithet, “Rudra.” Previously prone to anger, Majcen’s newfound understanding of Shiva sparked a profound connection with the deity. This connection became the catalyst for his personal transformation, enabling him to transmute anger into a meditative practice.

He admitted that, after coming to India, his faith in Shiva increased significantly. In 2007, Majcen represented Slovenia at both Under-18 and Under-19 levels. He progressed to the Under-20 and Under-21 teams in 2009, ultimately earning 18 international caps for Slovenia.
