Most international borders are guarded with heavy fencing, checkpoints and constant security. But there is one European town where the boundary is just a painted line on the ground. A recent viral video showed a couple sitting at the same table, yet technically in two different countries.
The clip may look ordinary at first glance, but it captures something truly unusual. This is life in a town where Belgium and the Netherlands meet in the quirkiest way possible.
‘Cheers’ From Two Different Countries
The viral video features Leanne and Dan, who run a joint travel account on Instagram. In the clip, Dan says, “So you think I’m having beer at a normal table, but I’m not because of this little line. This is basically the international border between the Netherlands and Belgium. So, Leanne is having a beer in Belgium while I’m sitting here in the Netherlands and having a beer in a completely different country.”
He points to the thin dividing line running right through the restaurant. When Dan asks Leanne to cheer, she pretends not to hear him. He laughs and says, “Oh! I’m in the Netherlands,” while she replies, “I’m in Belgium.”
The caption of the post reads, “Wait… they’re literally in different countries.”

The unusual moment struck a chord online as it gathered more than a million views. People shared their varied reactions to the video in the comments section.
One user joked, “Ideal long-distance relationship.”
Another suggested, “Omg if you both stand with one foot on each side, then you can be in 2 places at once, having beers. A Walk to Remember style!”
“Wow. Adding this to the bucket list. These kinds of experiences are possible only in the Schengen area,” a viewer said.
Someone else exclaimed, “Wow, so quirky and interesting,” while a person wondered, “Imagine if the rest of the world had these kinds of border towns.”
Where Borders Run Through Homes
The Belgium-Netherlands border stretches for 450 kilometres, with over 50 kilometres passing right through the towns Baarle-Nassau (Dutch side) and Baarle-Hertog (Belgian side). The unusual layout has deep historical roots. In the 12th century, local lords exchanged small pieces of land. These swaps created a patchwork that was later formalised in an 1843 treaty. Today, the area contains 22 Belgian and 7 Dutch enclaves, which created a puzzle of borders that run across streets, shops and even living rooms.
Life On The Line
The boundary is not invisible. White crosses and metal plates mark it clearly on the ground, while street signs with “NL” or “B” tell you which side you are on. In some homes, the border cuts right through the middle. A family kitchen could be in Belgium, while the bedrooms belong to the Netherlands.
