An 8-year-old boy swallowed magnets while pretending to have a tongue piercing. Louise Mcfarlane from England bought a magnetic building set for her eight-year-old son, Junior Gallon. Last year, Junior accidentally swallowed two strong magnets after placing one on each side of his tongue, which quickly shot to the back of his throat and Mcfarlane had to rush him to the hospital. An x-ray showed that the magnets were stuck in his stomach. Doctors said that if the magnets had connected to opposite sides of an important organ, it could lead to serious harm.
Junior was kept overnight for observation and a follow up x-ray showed that the magnets had moved to a safer spot. The doctors assured the mother that her child was no longer in danger and the magnets would pass naturally. Although the medical team couldn’t see if the magnets had passed, another x-ray later confirmed that they were no longer inside his body.
Speaking with Kennedy News and Media, Louise Mcfarlane explained, “Junior had come out of his room and said, ‘Mummy, I’ve got an emergency.’ I went in and he said he swallowed two of these magnets. He burst out crying. He said he thought it would be ‘cool’ having a tongue piercing. He had tried to make it look like a tongue piercing and as soon as he had done that, they pinged off his tongue and popped together. He was lucky they pinned together before he swallowed them, it could’ve been a completely different story.”
At the hospital, the doctor advised them “to keep magnetic items and clothes away from him, even (zippers), because the magnets in his body can follow the zips. We had to make sure we had no clothing like that for a good few weeks. You hear horror stories when kids do die, with batteries and stuff, so you instantly think the worst. His dad and I really prepared ourselves, but it was a massive relief when we realized he was okay.”
The mother of two has now decided never to buy magnetic toys again and advises other parents to avoid them as well. She mentioned that while these toys may look interesting on social media, they can be very dangerous. After the incident, she threw all the magnets away and now plans to stick with safer toys for his son, as reported by New York Post.
An Amazon representative felt saddened and mentioned that they were in contact with the affected family. They also confirmed that the product had been removed from the website.
