If you’re a social media enthusiast, you’ve likely come across stories of local tea vendors or momo sellers raking in lakhs of rupees each month. This has raised an intriguing question: is a job paying Rs 50,000 or Rs 60,000 after years of education truly worth it? Moreover, tales of successful college dropouts have led many to believe that obtaining a formal education is not essential for achieving wealth.
Here’s another story of an American college dropout who transformed her life from financial insecurity to generating a monthly passive income of USD 18,000 (Around Rs 15 lakh) through video creation.
In an essay for CNBC Make It, 39-year-old Amy Landino shared her decision to leave college fifteen years ago, despite having a $50,000 student loan. She believed this choice would ultimately benefit her future. At the time, many of her peers were struggling to find jobs after graduation. “None of my friends who’d graduated were landing jobs,” Landino noted.
Faced with the possibility of incurring additional debt to complete her degree, she chose to work as a public policy assistant instead. However, after some time she discovered her true passion of making videos and sharing them on platforms like YouTube. “I was thrilled when I discovered this site where I could upload my videos for free and share the links with friends,” she added.
As social media began to rise, she understood her ability and thought that this was something which she could make her career when one of her friends suggested to her that she could make content professionally. “It was at that moment that changed everything,” Landino stated.
This understanding sparked an idea, prompting her to start an additional job monitoring social media accounts for small businesses. Mixing this ambition with her full-time employment, she devoted evenings and weekends to expanding her developing agency.
In 2010, Landino made the bold decision to quit her job and dedicate herself to her burgeoning business. She focused on enhancing her skills in video editing and creating informative content about social media marketing. With each new video she uploaded to her YouTube channel, AmyTV, she realised that producing videos was not only engaging for her audience but also a lucrative revenue stream.
Additionally, she ventured into book publishing and authored titles such as Vlog Like a Boss and Good Morning, Good Life, which have collectively sold around 40,000 copies since their release in 2017.
At 39, Amy Landino’s diverse portfolio encompasses YouTube advertisements, affiliate earnings, brand collaborations, and product sales, generating approximately USD 18,000 per month.
