Blue Origin completed its 11th human spaceflight for the New Shepard program, carrying an all-female crew to space. Katy Perry was also one of the passengers onboard.

Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin recently completed its latest space flight with a six-member, all-female crew, including pop singer Katy Perry, CBS Mornings host Gayle King, film producer Kerianne Flynn, former NASA scientist Aisha Bowe, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, and the Amazon founder’s fiancée, Lauren Sanchez. The suborbital flight lasted less than 11 minutes above the Earth’s surface to the Karman line before returning them safely to Texas. While Katy Perry and her companions have been celebrating the historic space milestone, it seems not everybody is happy with the space flight.

Blue Origin’s space mission has drawn strong criticism from several celebrities, including Olivia Wilde, Amy Schumer, Olivia Munn, and Emily Ratajkowski.

Celebrities Slam Blue Origin’s All-Female Space Mission

Taking to TikTok to express her criticism, Emily Ratajkowski said, “The space mission this morning, that’s end-time s**t. Like, this is beyond parody. You care about Mother Earth, and it’s about Mother Earth, and you are going up in a spaceship that is built and paid for by a company that is single-handedly destroying the planet.” She further went on to a question about the resources that went into making the mission, closing with, “I am disgusted.”

Likewise, Olivia Munn also did not mince words during her appearance on Today With Jenna and Friends.

“I know this is not the cool thing to say, but there are so many things that are important in the world right now. What is the point? Is it historic that you guys are going on a ride? I think it’s gluttonous. Space exploration was to further our knowledge and help mankind, and what are they doing up there that is making it better for us down here?” she questioned during the interaction, as per Page Six.

Taking a snide dig at the space mission, Olivia Wilde shared a meme on her Instagram stories featuring pictures of Katy Perry after she exited the capsule. “Billion dollars bought some good memes, I guess,” she captioned. Amy Schumer also made fun of the entire situation by joking about how she got a message offering her to go to space.

Blue Origin Crew Members React To Backlash

Amid the ongoing criticism and backlash towards the space mission, the crew members have also broken their silence, defending the move. On CBS Mornings, Gayle King expressed that she felt very disappointed and saddened by the criticism. “And I also say this —what is it doing to inspire other women and young girls? Please don’t ignore that. I’ve had so many women and young girls reach out to me, and men, too, by the way. Men too, who say, ‘Wow, I never thought I could do that, but I see you doing it at this stage of your life,” she continued.

Jeff Bezos’s Sanchez addressed the matter during a press conference and said that she would like to bring the critics to Blue Origin and make them see how the employees have worked hard. “They love their work, and they love the mission, and it’s a big deal for them,” she added.

The human spaceflight marked Blue Origin’s 11th mission in the New Shepard program, marking the 31st flight overall and the first all-female mission in the company’s history.
