When a loved one dies, the burden of sadness might be too much to bear during life’s most trying times. Amid this grief, a sacred duty to respect the deceased’s last desires often arises. Interestingly, a family in the Madurai district of Tamil Nadu made a special gesture by transforming a woman’s funeral into a joyous celebration to grant her final wish.

The widow of temple priest Paramathadevar, Nagammal, 96, of Usilampatti, recently died of age-related health problems. Before passing away, Nagammal stated that she hoped her burial would be filled with songs and dancing rather than sadness and grieving. She left behind three generations of grandkids and great-grandchildren, including two sons, four daughters and 78 grandchildren.

When Nagammal was near death, she stated that she wanted her funeral to be lavish and feature a variety of musical and dancing performances by her relatives. She wanted her loved ones to say goodbye to her with joy.

As per her request, her family organised a lively and colourful farewell party that included traditional folk arts, music and dance performances by the village’s children and grandkids. In addition, Tamil Nadu’s popular traditional dance, the Kummi, was performed by women. The family’s youngest members even performed a variety of shows to display their talent.

What had begun as a funeral service quickly evolved into a joyous event resembling every year’s village fair. As Nagammal requested, family members, including grandkids and great-grandchildren, bid her farewell. In the end, the customary songs of sadness were also performed.

Everyone in the community commended the family for their sincere efforts to grant Nagammal’s final desire. Nagammal’s family turned a depressing and emotional occasion into a celebration of her long and happy life, setting an encouraging example in a place noted for its traditional rituals.

On social media, images and videos of funeral celebrations have gone viral and people are talking about how natural deaths should be honoured because they are unavoidable.
