A recent survey exploring British funeral preferences has highlighted a growing trend for unusual last wishes. The study, involving 100 funeral directors and 1,500 individuals who organised funerals in the past year, reveals changing attitudes towards death and commemoration.

Cremation is significantly more popular than burial in Britain, the survey found, with three-quarters favouring cremation and only one-quarter opting for burial. Of those choosing cremation, 51% wanted their ashes scattered in a place significant to them, while 27% preferred their ashes to be kept in an urn by family. 20% wished for their ashes to be buried.

Worryingly, in 18% of cases, close relatives were unaware of the deceased’s final wishes. Some requests were unconventional, including one individual’s desire to remain unclothed and another’s request to be placed in a rubbish bin for collection.

Other unique wishes involved using ashes for tattoos or jewellery (2% of respondents) and scattering ashes in space. The most remarkable request came from an individual who wished for their body to be parachuted into the cemetery.

The survey emphasises the growing desire for personalised and meaningful farewells, as individuals seek to express their individuality even in death.
