Many fans were left baffled after Gujarat Titans benched Washington Sundar for their opening match of IPL 2025. After the former champions took the field against Punjab Kings on Wednesday, questions were raised about the decision to exclude Sundar from the playing eleven. Even Google CEO Sundar Pichai weighed in on the topic after a fan expressed his concern on social media. The X user, who identifies himself as Pushkar, was unable to decode the mystery of dropping a bowler like Sundar, who has represented India in several bilateral series in recent times.
“How Sundar sneaks into the best 15 of India but doesn’t get a place in any IPL XI when 10 teams exist is a mystery,” the cricket fan, Pushkar, wrote on X. His remark attracted a reaction from Sunar Pichai. “I have been wondering this too,” the 52-year-old tech professional replied with a smiley.

A person humorously wrote, “For a moment, I thought he was referring to Washington Sundar. Then realized he was referring to Sundar based in a place nearer to Washington.” “California Sundar Wondering about Washington Sundar,” added another.
One fan joked about Sundar Pichai’s love for cricket, saying, “Hey Google, fire this person from the CEO post, he is replying to random cricket tweets instead of focusing on their work.” “I had to check twice if this is the real Sundar Pichai,” admitted a user. Some fans also wanted to know “which team Sundar Pichai supports in the IPL.”
Washington Sundar, who has played 56 T20Is and 23 ODIs in Indian colours, was signed by Gujarat Titans for Rs 3.2 crore at the IPL 2025 mega auction. But, he was stripped of a chance in the season opener, with the GT playing with a two-match spin attack featuring Rashid Khan and Sai Kishore. Besides Sundar, Glenn Phillips was another shocking name that was missing from the team sheet.
Punjab Kings batted first in Ahmedabad and set a 244-run target, with Shreyas Iyer, Priyansh Arya and Shashank Singh leading the run-fest. Sai Sudharshan and Jos Buttler made some commendable efforts for GT but ended up losing the home game by 11 runs.
