Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) has been facing online backlash after launching a dedicated social media handle for Hindi-speaking fans or those who don’t understand English. The X (formerly known as Twitter) account “Royal Challengers Bengaluru Hindi” with the handle “@RCBinHindi” has sparked controversy among Kannada speakers. Many have criticised the move by the Bengaluru-based IPL team as “Hindi imposition” and are demanding the deletion of the account.
RCB announced the launch of their Hindi page by sharing a video of Virat Kohli speaking in Hindi with English subtitles.
“Listen to your favourite player Virat Kohli in his favourite Hindi language, where he shared his thoughts on the joy of being associated with RCB for years and the auction,” reads the caption to the video when translated from Hindi to English.
It added, “Now all RCB videos are available in your favourite Hindi language too!”
In the video, Virat Kohli says, “A big hello to everyone at the RCB, the fans, the people involved in behind the scenes, the management. I am sending out this message to inform everyone that I’ve been retained once again for the three-year cycle of the IPL beginning next year. And I am as excited as ever.”
“Everyone knows what RCB means to me. It’s been a very special relationship over so many years, which continues to grow stronger. And what I’ve experienced playing for RCB is truly, truly special and I hope the fans and everyone who’s connected to the franchise feels the same,” he added.
Kohli further expressed, “At the end of the cycle, it’s going to be 20 years that I’m going to be playing for RCB. And that in itself is very, very special. I never thought that I was going to play for so many years for one team, but the bond I share with RCB is so special that I don’t see myself anywhere but RCB. So, I am very happy that happened.”
“We have a chance to create a strong team… and bring IPL trophy at least once in the next three years,” the 36-year-old cricketer said.

The page, that the IPL franchise launched on November 24, was met with criticism. An individual wrote, “As a proud Kannadiga and Bengaluru-based RCB fan, it’s disheartening to see our franchise using Hindi in their social media posts. Bengaluru represents Kannada culture and language, and RCB should respect this by prioritizing Kan-Eng in their communication.”
“No Support for this team until you don’t delete this Hindi X handle,” added another.
A third commented, “RCB down down. Oh! You’re already down.”
“Do one thing. Remove Bengaluru from your team name. Keep it as Royal Challengers Hindi,” said yet another Internet user.
A fifth chimed in, “Delete this handle right away.”
Many simply commented “Stop Hindi” and “Stop Hindi Imposition”.
