‘Steel-aluminum imports in US will take 25 percent duty’, big announcement of President Trump

US President Donald Trump: Taking a major trading step, US President Donald Trump has announced that 25 per cent duty will be imposed on all steel and aluminum imports in the US. Calling it an important part of his trade policy, Trump said that this step is being taken against those countries, who also impose similar charges on America’s products.

Trump also imposed a tariff of 25% on steel and 10% on aluminum during his first term. Although at that time, major trading partners like Canada, Mexico, and Brazil were given some extent relief, but now Trump has decided to implement the tariff again.

Why is the issue of tariff so important?
Trump and his supporters believe that these tariffs are a means of pressurizing countries (Canada and Mexico) that the US is facing problems like drug trafficking and illegal migration. Apart from this, this step is part of Trump’s economic strategy, which aims to protect the interests of American people and promote domestic jobs.

US major import sources
According to government data, the largest supplier of steel for the US is Canada, Brazil and Mexico. This is followed by South Korea and Vietnam. Canada is the largest supplier of aluminum to the US, which was 79% of the total imports in the first 11 months of 2024. Mexico is also a major supplier of aluminum scrap and aluminum alloys.

Possibility of business war due to tariff
Trump has also issued an order to impose tariffs of 25% on goods coming from Mexico and Canada and 10% on imported goods from China. This decision is likely to increase instability in global trade, as this step may affect the annual trade of more than 2.1 trillion dollars. However, Trump has granted a short time to Canada and Mexico, indicating that the possibility of new trade agreements with these countries remains.
