Sri Lankan Navy rescued four Indian fishermen trapped in the sea, second case in two weeks


The Sri Lankan Navy rescued four Indian fishermen in the fishing boat near the west coast, who went missing in the sea. This information was given in an official statement.

An official statement issued by the Sri Lankan Navy stated that the Sri Lankan Navy launched a coordinated discovery and rescue (SAR) campaign and fishermen were rescued on Sunday (July 6, 2025)."text-align: justify;"> MRCC informed the Sri Lankan Navy that an Indian boat had gone missing on June 29 due to adverse conditions of the weather and could not contact.

The statement said, “Four Indian fishermen were rescued as part of this (search and rescue) campaign, who were caught in the crisis due to the crisis of a fishing boat in the sea.” Fishermen living in Minicoy Islands of India were safely brought to Dikovita port, where the Sri Lankan Navy and Coast Guard provided them necessary assistance.

The statement said, “This is the second case in just two weeks of successful campaign to defend Indian fishermen in collaboration with MRCC, Colombo.” The Navy said that the fishermen were later handed over to the Vattala police station for further processing.

The issue of fishermen is a controversial issue in relations between India and Sri Lanka. In the past, Indian fishermen allegedly entered the water region of the island nation in the past, there have been incidents of firing on behalf of Sri Lankan Navy personnel and seizing their boats.

Pak Strait is a narrow water area separating Tamil Nadu from Sri Lanka. It is a rich area for fishermen from both countries.
