Jeju Air’s flight 7C 2216, coming from Bangkok, with a total of 181 people on board, crashed at South Korea’s Muan International Airport on Sunday, December 29. The plane burst into flames after colliding with a barrier on the runway, killing 179 out of the 181 on board. Only two of the six crew members survived the crash and are currently receiving treatment at a hospital.

Most of the passengers who lost their lives in the horrifying plane crash were on year-end trips or travelling overseas for the first time. Among them, there was a three-year-old boy, a woman who survived cancer, a 79-year-old man and a newlywed couple returning from their honeymoon.

According to a report by The Korea Herald, there was a 43-year-old man named Kang Ko who worked in public relations for the Kia Tigers baseball team. He was visiting Bangkok with his wife and 3-year-old son. It was their first-ever abroad trip. The child was the youngest victim of the plane crash, which claimed his parents’ lives as well.

A newlywed couple who married on December 13 was among the victims of the crash. They were returning from their honeymoon in Thailand. A woman who was reportedly going to get married next spring was on the same flight. Another family of three, comprising a father and his two sons, was on board the Jeju Air flight. They went to Bangkok to celebrate the elder son’s acceptance into a prestigious university.

With them was a 50-year-old woman who lost her life on the fateful day. The media outlet reported that it was her first trip after her year-long battle against cancer and surviving the disease. It was also her first overseas since her husband passed away three years ago. The report also mentioned that a 30-year-old reporter at a Gwangju-based media outlet was among the victims of the crash. She was visiting Bangkok with her husband. The trip was a reward from the reporter’s company.

The oldest victim in the crash was a 79-year-old man who was returning from a trip with his family. Beside him, his wife, two daughters, one of his sons-in-law, his granddaughter, and three grandsons were also on the flight that crashed on Sunday. As per the same report, 41 out of the 175 passengers were returning from a package tour to Bangkok. All of them left on Christmas.

The majority of the passengers were reportedly at least 50 years old or older, and 14 were under 20. On Monday, December 30, The Ministry of Education announced that four of the deceased were attending an elementary school, three were in middle school, three others were in high school, and one was attending a local daycare centre.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the deadly crash, while fire officials claim that the crash happened due to a bird strike and bad weather.
