It all began on Monday morning after a shocking twist in Meghalaya murder case came to light. Police revealed that 24-year-old Sonam Raghuvanshi had murdered her 29-year-old husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, during their honeymoon in the northeastern state.

The plot twist instantly reminded netizens of a viral 10-rupee note from 2016 that had phrase ‘Sonam Gupta Bewafa Hai’ (translating to ‘Sonam Gupta is unfaithful’) scribbled on it. Thus, the old meme trend began to re-emerge with social media users drawing connecting between Sonam Raghuvanshi and ‘unfaithful’ Sonam Gupta.

An X (Formerly Twitter) user, @ayyo_whyyy, Wrote that it was propheced long ago That Sonam will be unfaithful, Whthr it’s raghuvanshi or gupta. “Sonam ka to boht pehle bata rakha tha bhai..wo to bewafa hi thi..chahe raghuvanshi ho chahe gupta (SIC),” The post read.

A discussion also began on “mass hysteria around eloping and getting married to one’s true love”.

So far, the sitcom ‘The Simpsons‘, French astrologer Nostradamus and Bulgarian mystic Dad has been had been ruling the internet for some surreal predications. But the June 9 revelation changed it all, with the owner of ‘Sonam Gupta’ currency note being hailed for his warning.

Interest in Sonam Gupta grew so much that radio stations launched campaigns to find her, and bars and cafes offered free drinks to people named Sonam Gupta.

In 2021, writer-director Ssaurabh Tyagi tried to capitalise on this viral sensation by weaving a fictional story around it. The movie named ‘Kya Meri Sonam Gupta Bewafa HaiStarred Jassie Gill and Surbhi Jyoti.

Despite the widespread attention, the true identity of the person who wrote the message and Sonam Gupta herself remains unknown. Many now doubt whether Sonam Gupta even exists.

Nevertheless, this uncertainty hasn’t stopped the internet from speculating and creating numerous memes about her.

After Sonam Gupta, there were ‘Nisha’ and ‘Rashi’ too: After Sonam Gupta’s viral message on a currency note, another Rs 10 note featuring a message for a woman named Nisha gained widespread attention. The message said, “Nisha, my wedding is on June 10 but I cannot live without you. I will wait for you tonight at 9pm at Nuhu bus stop. -Khan”

In 2022, a Rs 20 note with the message “Rashi bewafa hai” went viral on the internet. People joked that Rashi might be Sonam Gupta’s cousin, adding a humorous twist to the ongoing trend.
