Smartphone is at second place after diesel fuel exports
According to data from the Harmonized System Code (HS Code) used by the World Trade Organization for international trade classification, smartphones are the second largest export category in India. Export of automotive diesel fuel is at number one. Data from the Union Commerce Ministry show that smartphone exports reached $13.1 billion during April-November of the financial year 2025. Which was 8.9 billion dollars in the same period a year ago. In the financial year of 2024, it was at fourth place in exports from India. In this way, the export of smartphones has jumped up by two years in a single year.
Apple Inc is taking a leap due to PLI scheme
Apple Inc.’s iPhone plays a major role in smartphone exports from India. Apple Inc. has achieved this leap due to the PLI i.e. Production Based Incentive Scheme of the Government of India. In 2018-19, only $1.6 billion worth of smartphones were exported. It was ranked 23rd among the products exported from the country in the HS code category. Two years later, the Government of India announced the PLI scheme. This paved the way for big companies like Foxconn, Pegatron and Wistron, which manufacture iPhones on contract for Apple, to enter the country. All these companies are making iPhones by setting up plants in India. Apart from this, Samsung has also increased the export of its smartphones from the country.
