Siechem Madurai Panthers accuses R. Ashwin’s Dindigul Dragons of ball tampering; TNPL asks team for proof

The Tamil Nadu Premier League has demanded proof from Seichem Madurai Panthers after allegations of ball tampering against Dindigul Dragons and skipper R. Ashwin after the teams’ clash at the Salem Cricket Foundation Ground on June 14.

In a mail accessed by Sportstar, the Madurai franchise accused the opponent of ball tampering by using ‘towels that seemed to have been treated with chemicals’.

The franchise demanded an investigation into the source of the towels used in the tournament and a chemical analysis to check for any external substances used to alter the condition of the ball.

During the aforementioned encounter, the Dragons had chased down SMP’s 151-run target with nine wickets in hand and over seven overs to spare. Skipper Ashwin scored a 29-ball 49, while his opening partner Shivam Singh remained unbeaten on 86 off 41 balls to help the side canter to the win.

In response, the TNPL called the allegations ‘unsubstantiated’, requesting the franchise to furnish ‘material evidence’ to add to these claims.

The league also explained that the towels supplied to both teams are of standard issue and made available to both teams equally. The umpires and match referee maintained a strict oversight of the condition of the ball throughout the match, it added.

“No protest or concern regarding ball tampering was raised during the match by any official or team representative. The allegation appears to be post-facto, speculative in nature and based solely on internal team communications without supporting evidence,” the TNCA said in a statement.

“Should the franchise possess credible and verifiable evidence, they may submit a formal request for an Independent Commission of Enquiry by 3 PM on 17th June, along with supporting material (video, photographic, or testimonial).

“TNCA cautions that baseless or defamatory allegations may lead to disciplinary action under the TNCA Code of Conduct and Operational Rules,” it added.
