Shubman Gill, India’s new Test captain, scored an unbeaten century against England at the Headingley, reminding everyone of Virat Kohli. Here’s why.

When 25-year-old Shubman Gill was tasked to lead Team India in the Tests, several eyebrows were raised. With the likes of seniors such as KL Rahul and Jasprit Bumrah in the red-ball squad, the skepticism of Gill taking on the reigns just ahead of the England tour was palpable all across. With time and reassuring words from cricket great Sachin Tendulkar stating that the cricketer from Punjab had it in him to lead the side, it was a matter of time for Gill to face the ultimate test. Asked to bat first by Ben Stokes at the Headingley on Day 1, India had two sensational centurions. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal (101) and captain Gill (127*) at the no.4 spot helped India post 359 at a loss of three wickets at the stumps.
Jaiswal deservedly earned praise for his stylish and sublime ton against England. It was, however, Gill’s unbeaten century on the first day of being India’s captain that was not lost on anyone.
Cricket fans drew comparisons between Gill and India’s most successful captain ever Virat Kohli.
Kohli-Gill
A fascinating trivia shared by ‘X’ user @Prithvi10_ shed light on the no.4 spot and the respective retirements of Tendulkar and Kohli.

“Kohli scored a 100 at no 4 in the very next test when Sachin retired. Gill has scored a 100 at no 4 in the immediate test after Kohli retired.”

100 On Test Debut
Just like Virat Kohli did in 2014, Gill joined the elite list of Test captains who slammed a ton on captaincy debut for India.
Magic of the blade?
Another fantastic stat was noted by ‘X’ user @ABsay_ek who reminded that MS Dhoni and Kohli became full-time Test skippers after 32 Test matches. Headingley Test in Leeds happens to be Gill’s 32nd red-ball match too.
Just noticed an interesting pattern: Both Dhoni and Kohli became full-time Test captains after 32 matches. And guess what? Right now Gill has played exactly 32 Tests too. Coincidence or is destiny setting the stage? pic.twitter.com/0BRqyakVjQ– Abhishek ab (@absay_ek) June 20, 2025
Don’t worry, we haven’t forgotten about Jaiswal’s hundred. The left-handed batter, who is having a dream run in Tests at the age of just 23, shared a fun stat with none other than Sourav Ganguly.
“A left handed batter hitting century in his 1st test match in England. We have seen this before,” the official account of Kolkata Knight Riders, an IPL franchise, reminded loyal Dada fans.
Dada notched up a ton on 20th June 1996 against England in the first Test match. Jaiswal eerily timed his three figures to perfection.
