How to celebrate Sheetla Shashthi? Know the special tradition of Odisha
In Sambalpur, Odisha, this festival is celebrated as ‘Setal Shashthi Yatra’ as a five -day festival. The event begins with a ritual called ‘Patra Pedi’, where a local family is considered to be the maternal uncle of Mata Parvati.

In the next two days, Goddess Parvati has a symbolic farewell and a procession is taken out till the wedding venue. Hanuman ji and Narasimha Lord go ahead in Shiva’s procession.

The next day after marriage, ‘Nagar Parikrama’ takes place, which is also called ‘Setal Shashthi Yatra’. During this time, people dance and sing with drums and music and enjoy the celebration.

According to the Puranas, Goddess Parvati, who was the second form of Goddess Sati, did harsh penance to get Lord Shiva in the form of husband. Pleased with his devotion, Shiva married him on the day of Jyeshtha Shukla Shashthi.

This festival is celebrated in memory of this auspicious marriage. Apart from this, Lord Kartikeya was also born on this day, who killed the demon Tarakasura and established peace in the world.
