Once Narad Muni asked Lord Shri Hari about the importance of Shattila Ekadashi, he said – ‘O Lord! Please accept my greetings. What is the virtue of fasting on Shattila Ekadashi? What is its story, please tell me. Shri Hari said, ‘Long ago, a Brahmin lived in the mortal world. She always used to fast. Once she kept fasting for a month, due to which her body became very weak.
She was extremely intelligent and never donated food for the sake of gods and Brahmins. I thought that this Brahmin has purified her body by fasting etc. and she will also attain Vaikuntha world, but she has never donated food, without food it is difficult for the soul to be satisfied.
Thinking like this, I went to the mortal world and begged for food from that Brahmin. On this the Brahmin said – O Yogiraj! Why have you come here? I said- I need alms. On this he gave me a lump of clay. I returned to heaven with that mass. After some time, she left her Brahmin body and came to heaven. Due to the influence of the lump of clay, she found a house with a mango tree at that place, but she found that house empty of other things.
She came to me frightened and said – ‘O Lord! I have worshiped you with many fasts etc., but still my house is empty, what is the reason for this?’ Shri Hari said – ‘You go to your home and when the deities and women come to see you, then ask them the importance of Shattila Ekadashi fast and its rules, do not open the door until they tell you.’
Hearing such words of the Lord, she went to her home and when the goddesses came and asked to open the door, then the Brahmin said – Please tell me the importance of Shattila Ekadashi. The divine woman narrated the greatness of Shattila Ekadashi, then the Brahmin woman opened the door. The divine women found Brahmini different from all other women. That Brahmin also fasted on Shattila Ekadashi as per the advice of the goddesses and due to its influence, her house was filled with blessings. It is said that the person observing this Ekadashi fast gets health for many births. After death the soul does not have to suffer pain.
