In a groundbreaking scientific achievement, scientists have successfully resurrected the dire wolf, a species that became extinct around 12,500 years ago. This remarkable feat was accomplished by Colossal Biosciences, a biotechnology firm based in Texas, USA.

Using genetic engineering techniques, including ancient DNA extraction, cloning, and gene editing, scientists have brought back to life two dire wolf pups named Romulus and Remus.

These pups, now six months old, stand four feet tall and weigh 36 kilograms. The dire wolf, previously known only through fossil records and popularised by the HBO series “Game of Thrones,” has now made a real-world return.

According to CNN, Colossal Biosciences utilised DNA from dire wolf remains, dating between 13,000 and 72,000 years old, and combined it with the DNA of the grey wolf to create these clones. Despite the historic success, the dire wolves are kept under tight security and away from human contact due to the potential danger they pose, even to their handlers.

This scientific breakthrough is seen as a potential game-changer and has opened up possibilities for the revival of other extinct species, such as the woolly mammoth, dodo, and Tasmanian tiger. The achievements of Colossal Biosciences have paved the way for further exploration into the de-extinction of lost species.
