Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently shared valuable advice for newly hired employees, reflecting on his 34-year journey with the tech giant. Nadella spoke about how his enthusiasm for being part of Microsoft has only grown over the years. In a discussion covering topics like artificial intelligence, gaming, and quantum physics, he urged new employees to view Microsoft as more than just a workplace. He emphasised the importance of not only striving for financial success but also discovering a deeper “sense of purpose and a sense of mission” in their work.
While appearing on Dwarkesh Patel’s podcast, Nadella said, “Through my 34 years now of Microsoft, each year I felt more excited about being at Microsoft versus thinking that, ‘Oh, I’m a company person or what have you.’ I take that seriously, even for anybody joining Microsoft. It’s not like they’re joining Microsoft as long as they feel that they can use this as a platform for their economic return, but also a sense of purpose and a sense of mission that they can accomplish by using us as a platform. That’s the contract.”
“So I think yes, companies have to create a culture that allows people to come in and become company people like me. Microsoft got it more right than wrong, at least in my case, and I hope that remains the case,” Satya Nadella added.
